How Do I Begin?
No two circumstances are alike; therefore, beginning the process can mean different starting points for different people.
In general, however, here are 6 steps to take prior to placing your loved one in a senior living community:
1 - Research Medicaid & Medicare (both fall under the Social Security Act)
2 - Schedule a History & Physical for Your Loved One
3 - Confirm the Level of Care Needed:
- Adult Home Care
- Independent Living
- Adult Day Services
- Assisted Living
- Memory Support (Specialized Assisted Living-Alzheimer’s or related dementia)
- Nursing Home / Skilled Care (level for rehabilitation)
- Hospice Care
--
If you suspect Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia (UNMC or Methodist)
--
If not, your Dr. should be able to assist you.
4 - Select Three or Four Senior Living Communities
5 - Tour All of Them – (through your loved one’s eyes)
6 - Before Making a Selection, Ask:
- To meet all direct care staff.
- About care plans.
- If they offer the next level of care.
- For a copy of activities & to meet the program’s director.
- About fees for services.
- If they are Medicaid certified.
- What happens when the money runs out?
